  • A train with a speed of 60 km/hr crosses a pole in 9 secs. What is the length of the train?

A. 120 m
B. 150 m
C. 325 m
D. 180 m

Labour Inspector-19

Speed of the train = 60 km/hr = 60 x (5/18) m/s
Time taken = 9 s
The distance travelled by the train will be its length.
Distance = Speed x Time
Length of the train = 60 x (5/18) x 9 = 150 m

  • Two trains 140 m and 160 m long run at the speed of 60 km/hr and 40 km/hr respectively in opposite directions on parallel tracks. The time (in seconds) which they take to cross each other, is:

A. 9 s
B. 9.6 s
C. 10.8 s
D. 10 s

Tax Inspector-18 (Guj)

Relative speed = (60+40) km/hr = 100 x (5/18) m/s = 250/9 m/s
Distance covered in crossing each other = (140+160) m = 300 m
Time = Distance / Speed
Time = 300 x (9/250) = 10.8 s

  • Two trains are running in opposite direction with the speed of 62 km/h and 40 km/h respectively. If the length of one train is 250 m and they cross each other in 18 seconds, the length of the other train is:

A. 145 m
B. 230 m
C. 260 m
D. 360 m

Asst Livestock-20/Asst Special Education Dept-20

Time = 18 s
Relative speed = (62+40) km/hr = 102 x (5/18) m/s = 85/3 m/s
Length of first train  = 250 m
Length of second train = L
Time = Distance / Speed
18 = (250+L) / (85/3)
3(250+L) / 85 = 18
250+L = (18×85) / 3
250+L = 510
L = 260 m

  • A train moves past a telegraph post and a bridge 264 m long in 8 seconds and 20 seconds respectively. What is the speed of the train?

A. 69.5 km/h
B. 70 km/h
C. 79.2 km/h
D. 79 km/h

Asst Punjab Workers Welfare Board LHRD-19

Length of the bridge = 264 m
Time taken to pass the bridge = 20 s
Time taken to pass the post = 8 s
Length of the train = X
To pass the bridge, train need to cover Train’s length + Bridge’s length (X+264)
Speed = Distance / Time
X/8 = (264+X) / 20
20X = 264×8 + 8X
20X – 8X = 264×8
12X = 2112
X = 2112 / 12
X = 176 m

Speed of the train = 176 / 8 = 22 m/s
Converting into km/h
22 x (18/5) = 79.2 km/h

  • Three men start together to travel the same way around a circular track of 11 km. Their speeds are 4, 5.5 and 8 km/h respectively. When will they meet at the starting point for the first time?

A. after 11 hours
B. after 21 hours
C. after 22 hours
D. after 33 hours

AD (I) FIA-19

Time for one revolution by each of man = 11/5, 11/(11/2), 11/8
= 11/5, 2/1, 11/8
Taking L.C.M of 11/5, 2/1, 11/8
= 22 hr

Hence, they will meet at starting point after 22 hr.

  • In a 100 m race, A covers the distance in 36 seconds and B in 45 seconds. In this A beats B by:

A. 24 m
B. 20 m
C. 28 m
D. 30 m

Zilladar-20

Distance covered by B in 9 s
= (100/45) x 9 = 20 m
∴ A beats B by 20 m

  • In covering a distance of 30 km, Abdul takes 2 hours more than Basit. If Abdul doubles his speed then he would take 1 hour less than Basit. What is the speed of Abdul?

A. 15 km/hr
B. 8 km/hr
C. 5 km/hr
D. 10 km/hr

Labour Officer-17

Let Abdul’s speed be x km/hr
Then, 30/x – 30/2x = 3
⇒ 6x = 30
⇒ x = 5 km/hr
